July 16th – Tracy Bain – Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon
The presentation will highlight Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon & Southwest Washington‘s “Trust Your Gut” campaign, which provides an overview of ovarian cancer signs and symptoms, statistics and risk factors. As there is no diagnostic test for ovarian cancer, awareness and education are the best resources for women so they can advocate for themselves and their health if they do not feel well. The presentation will also provide information on the organization’s programs for ovarian cancer survivors and the broader Oregon and SW Washington community.
Program Chair – Elise Bauman
Meeting Location: Cedar Hall, Main Street Alliance Building

Club Highlights & Upcoming Community Service Opportunities
Hello fellow Rotarians. Thanks for your participation in all the Rotary activities that are occurring this month. Last week our Wednesday meeting was a “field trip” to Capital Manor where David Lewis presented the Manor’s history, the current features, and what lies ahead. He also informed us about survey responses of residents as well as the aging demographics of various population age groups. Also, the Capital Manor food service team provided a fantastic lunch. I think the spirits of the 50 in attendance was lifted greatly by the lunch offering.
On Thursday evening a few of us attended the baseball game at Roto-Rooter Park (formerly Volcanoes stadium) and had an opportunity to mix it up with Rotarians from the six other Salem area Rotary Clubs (Keizer, East Salem, West Salem, Stayton, Creekside, and the e-Club). We also had opportunity to discuss Rotary business with and get to know our 2025-26 District Governor, Susanne Holmberg. She is very energetic and circulated her bubbly personality throughout the group of Rotarians in attendance.
On Friday, a group of nine whiskey aficionados were flown by Don Lulay to and from a location in Nevada to enjoy a whiskey tasting. I have talked with one of the group and it sounds like a good time was had by all.
On Sunday, a much larger group gathered for the Rotary Chili Cookoff at the Rotary Pavilion at Riverfront Park. Since I am writing this before the event I can only estimate the fun time that will be experienced by all. Chili with no beans, spicy hot, very mild, meat, no meat, and maybe other varieties I am sure they will all find a Chili to their liking. We look forward to hearing about the winning chili cook on Wednesday.
We are always looking for ways in which our club can roll up our sleeves and get involved in the Salem community through Hands On Service projects. If you know of a non-profit organization in Salem that could use help from 6, 8 or 10, 12 Rotarians on the 3–4-hour project please bring your ideas forward to Alicia Bay who serves on our Board of Directors as our Community Needs chair. We are hoping to find these opportunities to get out and help others, maybe even two or four times per month.
Our speaker topic this week is ovarian cancer which follows the Rotary theme for July of Maternal and Child Health. I hope to see you all on Wednesday for this important topic and the camaraderie that we all enjoy when we meet!!
