August 28th – Salem-Keizer School District: Superintendent Andrea Casteneda

This week’s program will feature a presentation by Andrea Castaneda, Superintendent of Salem Keizer Schools, on the current status of the S_K Schools under the circumstances of major financial cutbacks that had to be made – due to the State’s funding reduction and the further impact of the financial costs for settling the threatened teacher strike.

There will also be time for questions after her presentation.

Program Chair: Karl Rashkes

Meeting Location: Willamette Heritage Center – Dye House

President’s Message

Is the 4-Way Test Simple or Complicated?  It’s a matter of perspective.

The Rotary 4-Way Test is a guiding principle for Rotary Clubs throughout the world.

Developed by Herbert J. Taylor, a Chicago Rotarian and businessman, the 4-Way Test was initially conceived as a simple yet powerful ethical guide for businesses during a time of economic uncertainty. Taylor believed that applying these principles could help rebuild trust and integrity in business practices, which were severely shaken during the Great Depression.

Last year, Superintendent Andrea Castaneda powerfully applied each component of the 4-Way Test to the challenges facing the Salem Keizer School District.  She helped us realize each of these tests can be viewed differently depending on a persons’ perspective.

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Today, Herbert Taylor would tell us to use these principles to help find common ground in the challenging times we face today.

I look forward to hearing from Andrea on August 28 to learn more about the upcoming school year and her perspective on what challenges face K-12 education now and in the future.
