February 5th – Salem Rotary Club’s International Service
You have recently seen examples of the great work that our club does in our community. The Salem Rotary Club is also very active in serving others around the world. Our club has been involved with countless projects through our international services committee for decades.
Tomorrow, Howard Baumann and Pam Wasson will share with you two projects that our club is actively engaged in. Howard will discuss a WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) project that our club established in Haiti in 2010 and Pam will present a WASH project at a primary school in Kenya.

The Global Impact of Rotary’s World Community Service Projects
As Rotarians, we are committed to “Service Above Self,” a principle that extends beyond our local communities and into the global arena. Through our World Community Service (WCS) projects, we embody the true spirit of Rotary by addressing critical humanitarian needs around the world. These projects not only change lives in developing countries but also strengthen the bonds of international goodwill, creating a more interconnected and compassionate world.
Addressing Critical Needs Globally
Rotary’s international service efforts span a wide range of vital issues, including clean water access, healthcare, education, economic development, and disaster relief. One of the most remarkable aspects of our work is how a single project, supported by dedicated Rotarians and partners, can create lasting change for entire communities.
For instance, through Rotary’s Global Grants, clubs around the world collaborate to implement sustainable initiatives, such as building wells in water-scarce regions, funding medical missions, or providing vocational training to empower individuals economically. At our meeting on February 5, you’ll hear about how projects our club supports are amplified through matching funds from our District and Rotary International, maximizing their impact.
The Power of Partnership
One of the greatest strengths of Rotary’s WCS projects is the power of collaboration. By working with Rotary clubs in different countries, local NGOs, and international organizations, we ensure that our efforts are effective and sustainable.
A prime example is our ongoing fight against polio. The Rotary Foundation, in partnership with the World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been instrumental in nearly eradicating this disease worldwide. This global effort proves what Rotarians can achieve when we come together with a shared mission.
Our Local Club’s Global Reach
Our participation in World Community Service projects connects us to the larger Rotary family and reminds us that service knows no borders.
Together, we have the power to uplift communities, create sustainable change, and live out Rotary’s vision of a better world. Thank you for your dedication to service—both at home and abroad.
