President’s Message
March Into Action:
Salem Mayor Julie Hoy Delivers Annual State of the City Address
This week’s program will be the annual State of the City address provided by Salem mayor Julie Hoy. This event will be at the Salem Convention Center.
This year’s event is hosted by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Salem City Club and the Rotary Club of Salem.
Mayor Hoy’s presentation will provide an annual report on the City of Salem’s accomplishments in the past year and goals for the current year. The City’s budget and financial reporting “year” runs from July 1 to June 30. Since we are now in March, it is very likely that the presentation will cover events/accomplishments from 2024-25 and 2025-26 with a look forward into 2026-27.
If you are unable to attend and want to view the presentation, the event is generally available for viewing online on CC:Media Comcast Cable Channel 21 or on the City of Salem YouTube channel.
The City of Salem mayor is elected by voters citywide and works with eight councilors to establish policy and address city issues. Mayor Hoy was elected in May of 2024 for the 2-year term running from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026.
The Mayor and City Council members in Salem are generally considered unpaid volunteers.
It can be interesting to consider Rotary concepts and ideas while listening to the mayor’s presentation. Concepts and ideas such as the Four-Way Test:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will if build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Also, consider the various Rotary monthly themes which might be encompassed in the responsibilities of the City of Salem:
- Economic and Community Development
- Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
- Environment
I hope the presentation by Mayor Hoy is informative and helpful to all concerned. I will be in Arizona from March 6-14 and will return to run the Rotary meeting on March 18. As a CPA, it seems odd to be vacationing in March, but retirement has its rewards. This is my first March vacation since my senior year in college, 1977. We will be spending time in Sedona and have arranged for a guided hiking adventure through Wildland Trekking called Red Rock Adventurer. The four days of hiking will cover about 33 miles.
See you on March 18.
