December 2: McCulloch Foundation’s Sharewell Model: Best Hope for Tackling the Homelessness and Affordability Challenges
John McCulloch grew up next to Bush Park in Salem, where he played in and around two of Oregon’s most famous Victorian mansions. From this came a love of great houses and architecture.
His father, John McCulloch was a Salem City Councilman and later Oregon’s Assistant Attorney General. His mother is local artist and activist, Sue-Del. John grew up with these two great examples of service and appreciation for the humanities.
After completing studies at the University of Oregon, Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, and Art at the University of London, John taught at PSU and a local high school while growing his distinguished Design Build firm, McCulloch Construction. He has completed over 1,000 successful high-end projects, including preserving several historic properties.
John has been among Portland’s most active philanthropists, opening his home to numerous charity and non-profit events, raising millions of dollars over the last ten years. He established McCulloch Foundation, which attacks homelessness through affordable housing by adapting existing housing stock to create micro communities.

Message from President Sue
Greetings fellow Rotarians!
I’d like to share a note from the Camas Club regarding their relief work and our donation to purchase little fridges.
Your club’s contribution paid for the small refrigerators that are now in cabins at the Taloali Camp in the canyon. Families have been staying there in rustic circumstances and having a place to keep food cold is a wonderful gift.
The supplies we brought them went directly to the relief warehouse in Sublimity where Greg Atkin, council
member of the City of Sublimity, met our group. We hauled two truckloads and a trailer full of much needed things. Shovels and tarps and cleaning supplies, towels and sheets and household items, toys and clothes and space heaters and fridges. It was a big donation!
I think all in, we donated close to $14,000 worth of supplies. Tom Crozier convinced our local ACE hardware to help us shop at their cost so we could do more with our dollars!
What a great thing to feel purposeful and helpful in the midst of a pandemic. It felt even better knowing your Rotary was a part of the effort. Thanks to Renee for connecting us quickly.
The Wildfire Relief folks have indicated that they would welcome a crew of Rotarians back in the spring of 2021. The clean-up and work to rebuild will begin then since it is now too cold and wet for folks to do much outside.
Please let me know when I might attend your meeting and share my power point slides.
With sincere thanks and a big virtual hug from our club,
Kathy Bussman
