April 23rd – Panel of Rotary Students of the Month

This week we’ll hear from a panel of three former Rotary Students of the Month from CTEC, North, and South High Schools.

Dylan Chavez will be the moderator and will be asking the students about:

  • Challenges to student success in their schools
  • Student engagement with local politics and the community
  • Defining success and happiness in their peer group

Time for questions from the floor has been factored into the program so think about what you would like to learn about the high school experience in 2025.

Program Chair – Elise Bauman

Meeting Location: Cedar Hall, Main Salem Alliance Building

President’s Message

Friends Become Our Extended Family

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible way that friends become part of our extended family. Time and again, our Rotary friendships prove this to be true—stepping up to offer unwavering support whenever we need it most.

Our work families also form a vital part of this extended circle. Recently, I attended a surprise retirement celebration for a dear friend and former coworker who dedicated 42 years of service to a credit union in Northern California. I had the privilege of working alongside her for 15 of those years. Together, we navigated numerous challenges in our personal lives, always finding strength in each other. During the celebration, her husband spoke from the heart, saying, “We consider all of you our family.” His words resonated deeply.

Just last week, I received unexpected news—my son had ruptured his Achilles tendon. It happened on a Monday night, and by Thursday, he was already scheduled for surgery. I left my conference early, rented a car, and traveled to be by his side—driving him to and from the hospital and staying with him in the days that followed. To my great comfort, his Air Force friends immediately reached out, offering their support without hesitation.

Extended family can take many forms. They are the ones who show up—through joyful celebrations and unexpected trials. They offer love and care unconditionally, and in return, we are there for them when they need us.

I’ve experienced this same spirit within Rotary. Whenever I’ve needed help—especially when asking past presidents, board and committee members for help—they’ve each responded with genuine enthusiasm and willingness. The service we do together to support our community, and the world is a cornerstone of Rotary. But equally important are the bonds we forge along the way. These friendships are not just a bonus—they are the heart of our shared journey.
