Salem Rotary’s January 31st Celebration: Games, Grants, and Giving Back

Good morning, Salem Rotarians! I hope you have each found ways to enjoy the bright sunny days over the past two weeks. Being able to get outside and enjoy some dry weather days at this time of year is a real bonus. If you were unable to get outside, hopefully you had a window to enjoy the view of the bright sunny days.

At last week’s meeting I enjoyed the spontaneity of a couple of Bell Ringers that were brought on by my mention of Squirrel Appreciation Day. Thanks to Anne Colao and Mel Rueppel for sharing information about squirrels they had encountered.

Saturday, January 31, 2026, is a big day for the Rotary Club of Salem. Saturday evening, from 5:30pm until the winter picnic is over, we will celebrate the Good Works of Salem Rotary over the past year, present grants to our 2025-26 Large Grant recipients, play games, sign-up for “Experiences” happening from April through August, enjoy a picnic themed buffet dinner, and raise a paddle to add to our resources for funding grants and other community investments in the 2026-27 Rotary year.

I look forward to this event each year for several reasons:

  • What have the creative minds of the event committee devised for fun and games and general atmosphere this year. Use your imagination and put the creativity of Holly Berry, Jenn Columbus, Tammy Dennee, Kim Lemman, Katie Martin Hewitt, Jill Munger, Beth Rhoades, and Steven Trahan together and we are always amazed at the collective result.
  • What will we learn from our MCs for the evening? Ann and Tony Syrett have so many life experiences to share, and their storytelling abilities are tremendous and spontaneous. There are bound to be a few surprises and wow moments as Ann and Tony guide us through the evening.
  • Experience Boards – the assortment of events, the creativity, the timing spread through the year. This year there are 179 sign-up spots on the 10 experience boards. These events will bring groups together ranging from as few as 7 (Sonoma) and to as many as 75 (Rooftop Movie Night).

Thanks to our wonderful event committee.

Thanks to our event sponsors.

Thanks to those who have purchased event tickets.

Thanks to those who sign up for experience board events.

Thanks to those who participate in the paddle raise to support our community investment goals.

All of these individuals and organizations are exhibiting SERVICE ABOVE SELF and supporting Rotary’s 2025-26 theme of UNITE FOR GOOD.

See you on Wednesday and Saturday!
