1927-1928, R.E. Lee Steiner

[GAB} “In this decade …. the Club began its long record of devoting a December collection for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Fund. Playground recreation in Salem got its start and initial support largely through the work of Salem Rotary. For several years C.P. Bishop did the collection job, raising as much as $900 for this purpose. By 1928, however, the City of Salem was in a position to take over the burden, along with the school district, and Rotary was no longer needed.”
(Editor’s note: of course, that situation didn’t last. In later years, an annual collection effort for the Salvation Army returned, and school playground projects returned as occasional Community Service projects.)
