October 14: Depolarizing Within – Understanding Beyond Stereotypes
Dan Sockle is a member of the Rotary Club of Three Creeks, Vancouver. His career has been mostly in communications intelligence, criminal and civil investigations, serving in various military and intelligence agencies including international service in Germany and
Iraq. More recently, he has compiled and edited a book, taught courses at Clark College, and has been an active volunteer in youth sports, Rotary, veterans advocacy, and community mediation.
Dan is currently an organizer and moderator for Braver Angels, a national nonprofit whose mission is to depolarize America by bringing together people who differ politically, find common ground, achieve higher levels of mutual understanding, healthier levels of mutual respect and trust and, in a bipartisan way, collaboratively problem-solve.
Dan will share how to civilly and constructively sort through the myriad of “Facts,” “Truths,” and “Settled Science,” that contain misinformation and disinformation intended to polarize, divide, and paralyze the problem-solving process. He will provide an overview of key communication and problem-solving skills important to all “community activists” intent upon making a positive difference – locally, nationally, and internationally.

Greetings fellow Rotarians.
As we near election day our program, Better Angels, is particularly relevant. I look forward to seeing you all Wednesday.
A reminder of our hands-on volunteer opportunity: Please join us Wednesday, October 14 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm to help place gravel on the footpaths at the Historic Deepwood Museum and Gardens. The walking trails at Deepwood are a treasure for people looking to experience nature in the heart of the city. The gravel pathways are down to dirt in most places and with the winter rains will become a muddy mess.
The City of Salem Parks Department will supply the gravel, tools and wheelbarrows and our Rotary Club will provide the labor to get the project done in a short period of time. Feel free to invite others to join. The only things required from each participant will be a mask, gloves, your own water if desired. For those that can join us, we’ll see you on Wednesday with bells (and masks) on. More information is in the Announcement section below.
