The Salem Area Trail Alliance (SATA) will be the recipient of our Good Works major grant this year. If you aren’t familiar with their work, let me give you a bit of background about their organization.
SATA was founded in 2010 by two civic-minded individuals: Jeff McNamee, faculty member at Linfield College in the Department of Health and Human Performance; and Mike Petersen, attorney with Heltzel Williams law firm. They shared a love of mountain biking, and wanted to find a way to build bike trails close to the City for residents to use.
“I’m a BMX kid from the 80’s,” said Jeff in a phone conversation with me last week. He grew up racing dirt bikes and building jumps to test his skills. He said that not all kids are a good fit – or can afford to participate – in team sports. Fellow SATA Board member Beth Dayton, M.D., agrees, telling a story about her own son’s difficulties and how he was helped by trail riding…
At this week’s meeting, we will receive a status report and update of where the Oregon Garden is and where it is headed. Mark Hunter, a new club member will present. “The Oregon Garden has become a significant visitor stop in the Mid-Willamette Valley and it is important the club members know what’s happening there.”
See you at the Salem Convention Center at 12pm on Wednesday!
