5/12 Committee Meeting – Time for committees to meet and plan

Committees and Hands-on Service Meeting!

If you are signed up to help with the hands-on, book cleaning project, please arrive at 11am to get started. We will be taught how to clean books, then off we go cleaning the hundreds of books that we collected over the last month. Excellent work on gathering books everyone!

At noon, the book cleaners will take a break for lunch and for the start of the club meeting. Once the formalities of starting the meeting are taken care of, the service will continue, and the International Service Committee and the Public Image Committee will meet. All club members are welcome to join these two committees to learn more about what they do and see if you’d like to join.

Also available this week, Doug will be at a table ready to answer questions concerning club dues or budget, and Renee will be helping anyone with questions about Dacdb.

Meeting Location: Cedar Hall, Main Salem Alliance Building

Salem Rotary & Salem Rotary Foundation:

How our two organizations work together

During the 2025-26 Rotary year we have grown our membership from 117 to 130. When you become a member of the Rotary Club of Salem, you are also a member of the Salem Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Salem is a corporate organization with tax exempt status provided by IRS section 501(c)(4). Such an organization is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization operated primarily to promote social welfare and promote the common good and general welfare of a community, such as through civic improvement, public advocacy, or community programs, rather than benefiting private individuals or select groups. The operating year for the Club is July 1 to June 30.

The Salem Rotary Foundation is a corporate organization with tax-exempt status provided by IRS section 501(c)(3). Such an organization is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization and is primarily organized to serve the public good rather than private interests. The organization itself does not pay federal income tax on revenue used to support its mission, and donors can deduct contributions from their taxable income. The operating year for the Foundation is July 1 to June 30.

The Rotary Club of Salem is governed by a twelve-person board, each of which serves a 3-year term of office. Terms expire on a staggered schedule such that 3 or 4 board members conclude their terms each fiscal year. Elections are held annually in December for board positions which begin the following July 1. The board positions include President, Past-president, President-elect, Secretary/Treasurer, Director of Membership, Director of Club Good Works, Director of Fellowship/Vocational, Director of Club Operations, Director of New Generations, Director of Public Image, Director of Community Needs, and Director of World Community Service. The Club also has formed approximately 30 committees which function under the direction or oversight of one of the Board Directors.

The Salem Rotary Foundation is governed by a seven-person board, each of which serves a 3-year term of office. Terms expire on a staggered schedule such that 2 or 3 board members conclude their terms each fiscal year. Elections are held annually in December for board positions which begin the following July 1. Upon formation in July, the Foundation board designates board members to serve as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer for a one-year period. The positions of Secretary and Treasurer may be the responsibility of one or two people as determined by the board members.

The operating budget for the Rotary Club of Salem involves annual revenues and expenses of approximately $50-60,000. The major source of revenue is membership dues paid by each member of the Rotary Club of Salem – approximately $45-$50,000 annually. The largest expense is dues paid to Rotary International and District 5100 – approximately $20-$25,000.

The operating budget for the Salem Rotary Foundation includes revenues of approximately $300,000 derived equally from contributions and investment earnings. The expenditure budget for the Foundation includes approximately $155,000 of contributions to support local and international youth-focused charitable causes.

I hope this summary helps provide information that is useful to your understanding of how our Club and our Foundation work and how they fulfill different roles. I hope it also helps each of you understand how you can make a difference to each of these Salem Rotary organizations by your specific involvement in our various activities and community efforts.
